Construction and Development Advisory Council

The Construction and Development Advisory Council started in October 2014 to investigate and make recommendations to government on reforms to reduce red tape in the construction and development sector.

The council engaged consulting firm Deloitte to assist in the investigation and to prepare a report to government.

Deloitte met with relevant agencies, local governments and stakeholders in Darwin and Alice Springs.

A survey was sent to over 900 registered builders across the NT.

A full day workshop was held in Darwin in March 2015 with participants from key agencies and the council to discuss solutions to the issues identified.

The council’s final report:

  • highlighted the key challenges faced by the private sector and government agencies
  • recommended fundamental reform to the way the sector was regulated.

The Northern Territory Government has considered the report and has approved implementation of the report’s recommendations for reform.

These reforms fall into three broad areas:

  • completion of strategic planning
  • greater consistency in decision making
  • establishment of a central customer account system.

The Northern Territory Government has endorsed all of the recommendations and committed to their implementation.
